Words are not enough to describe this. This anime series is without a doubt the best I have ever seen. And the wonderful thing is that it is not over yet.
There is no doubt that strong source material is the bedrock on which this achievement is based, and Togashi-sensei's writing, story and characters are so complex, so simple, so engaging. Even Pouf at the end. Madhouse take this richness and add an extra layer to it with music and animation choices that could perhaps be called brave, except that they work.
By the end, there are no longer good guys and bad guys, villains and heroes in this confrontation. Humanity can be just as cold and calculating, if not more so, than the Ants. What was scary about them was that for the first time, a predator had come along to knock us off our top spot.
For me therefore the last few episodes of this arc, which I watched all at once, were more about individual battles and confrontations, along with a very strong theme of loyalty.
Gon's despair and Pouf's fear were the two big drivers which led their companions into certain courses of action, but at the end the emotion that was most beautifully depicted was love. Even now, five days later, I am still in tears as I remember the final scenes of episode 135. For once there is no ending theme: just Meruem and Komugi represented in a really simple, moving manner.
I could go on, and talk about all the different styles of animation used, for example for the sequences when Youpi a Pouf are feeding themselves to the king, or when Meruem regains a memory. But there is so much to say, and others who can say it much better than me.
